Many Hands creating much beauty!
2009 has so far been a great year for the gardens around Avalon! Dozens of individuals have so far volunteered over 300 hours of weeding, planting, mulching and tending the gardens. Our Gardening With Grace program this year planted flower gardens at eighteen of our properties around town - and they are all looking better than ever!
This year also saw the expansion of our Edible Avalon community vegetable gardens - a project that we have partnered on with Project Grow and Food Gatherers. We’re already harvesting greens, herbs, strawberries, tomatoes and much more from the six raised bed gardens. Each garden is located at an Avalon property, and tenants work with the help and guidance of volunteers. In addition to the gardening, there havebeen tons of fun and educational activities, including strawberry jam making and watermelon rind pickling classes, and a special session just for the kids of Avalon… how to build a sunflower fort!
