Edible Avalon at a Glance

- Started as a single community garden in 2008, there are now gardens at 14 Avalon Housing properties
- Over 3,200 pounds of fresh, organic produce were grown by tenants in 2011
- A corps of volunteers visit gardens weekly to share recipes & garden skills
- Cooking classes and food preservation workshops
- Youth programming centered on out local foodshed and sustainable gardening
- Nutrition and health-related programming reaches over 450 Avalon tenants

Edible Avalon is much more than just a gardening program. Each year, we’ve added programming intended to improve health and nutrition outcomes among tenants, build community, increase skill sets, provide leadership opportunities, and empower participants to become more self-reliant and able to build on their successes. Tenants are involved in the program as site coordinators, teachers, and mentors.
