Our Properties
Avalon properties offer a wide range of apartments to meet the needs of the diverse population we house. The majority of our buildings are located in the near downtown Ann Arbor area, and range from an 1869 farmhouse with six apartments to a more standard complex completed in the fall of 2005 with 30 units.
Built in 1925 and acquired by Avalon in 1992, this is the first property purchased by Avalon Housing and where it all began. Six tenants live in unique efficiency apartments, including a fully accessible unit.
North Main Street
Also acquired in 1992, these two properties were both built in the early 1900’s. The yellow house holds one efficiency apartment and four sleeping rooms. The brick home contains one one-bedroom apartment and six sleeping rooms.
South Division Street
These three houses were built in 1900, 1910, and 1930, and acquired by Avalon in 1993. Together they hold ten sleeping rooms, three efficiencies, two one-bedroom apartments, and one two-bedroom apartments.
East Davis Street
Purchased by Avalon Housing in 1994, this building could tell a story or two. Originally built in the late 1800’s and remodeled several times, its most famous incarnation is as Junior Smith’s Como Club – one of the best-known local black nightclubs of the 1940’s and 1950’s. According to an article in the October, 2004 Observer, the Como was “as famous for it’s 25 cent fish sandwiches and fried chicken baskets as it was for its music.” Still a setting for great social activity, these fourteen efficiency units share a former one-bedroom apartment as common space for movie nights and monthly meals.
Stimson Apartments
Built in two separate sections in 1959 and 1960, Stimson Apartments contain eighteen one-bedroom and five two-bedroom apartments. Acquired by Avalon in 1994, a number of units have been made wheelchair accessible. Accessible raised beds, built by volunteers in 2004, make community gardening for interested tenants here a welcome activity.
West Summit Street
These two properties, acquired at different times, represent the diverse needs of the community Avalon serves. The older property, built in 1900 and acquired in 1995, contains five efficiency and one one-bedroom apartment and primarily houses individuals. The second property built in 1992 and acquired in 2003 consists of two three bedroom units ideal for families.
Allen Drive
These four two bedroom apartments, built in 1963 and acquired in 1995 and 1996, allow Avalon to accommodate families in need of housing.
West Huron Street
Also known as the Benjamin Crookston House this home was built in 1869 as a farmhouse with land that stretched all the way south to Liberty Street. It now includes five efficiencies, and two one-bedroom apartments. In 1935 the first gathering of the Ann Arbor Friends Meeting (Quaker) was hosted in the living room.
North Glendale
Also located on Ann Arbor’s West Side, these two buildings constructed in 1963 offer four two bedroom apartments. Acquired in 1997, Avalon further increased affordable housing stock for families in our community.
Arbordale Apartments
Acquired in 1998, this 40-unit apartment complex significantly increased Avalon’s housing stock. Built in 1957, Arbordale required significant remodelling efforts to bring it up to Avalon standards. Arbordale consists of 34 one-bedroom apartments and five two-bedroom apartments. Housing Support Services maintains an on-site office for tenants in a ground floor two-bedroom apartment.
North Ashley
Built in 1900 and acquired in 1998, this three story home contains six sleeping rooms that share common space on the main floor. Housing Support Services works from the basement office space to provide services to tenants at all Avalon properties.
Pontiac Trail
Built in 1968 these four two-bedroom apartments on Ann Arbor’s northside were acquired by Avalon in 2000 to house formerly homeless families.

Carrot Way Apartments
Carrot Way Apartments are the first housing Avalon took from blue print to construction to management. The thirty units on this site consist of eight three bedroom town homes, sixteen two bedroom, and six one bedroom apartments. All ground floor units are wheelchair accessible, including our first Community Center building.
South First Street
Built in 1966, Avalon purchased this seven unit apartment building in 2006. The property is home to formerly homeless youth who receive supportive services from Ozone House staff.
Third Street
Originally built in 1930 as apartments, this brick home contains two efficiencies and four one-bedroom apartments. Acquired by Avalon in 2007 as part of the Blueprint to End Homelessness, all six units house chronically homeless adults.
