The
Avalon Housing Tenant Organization, Pilot Light, was created
in 1996 to bring tenants together with the following goals:
- Build community among Avalon tenants
- Increase tenant participation in policy setting, project
planning, and property management responsibility
- Provide opportunities and resources for tenants to achieve
greater self-determination
The name was chosen by the original organizing group to reflect
the idea that one small flame can get a lot of things cooking!
As a scattered site housing organization, Pilot Light elected
to use a Site Representation system in which each property
designates a site rep who meet together monthly to coordinate
Pilot Light's activities, plans and organizational development.
Current activities include:
- Publication of a quarterly tenant newsletter
- Distribution of organic produce from the Community Farm
of Ann Arbor
- Distribution of welcome baskets to new tenants
- Community education and advocacy
- Weekly movie nights
- Computer training
- Social gatherings
- Organizational skills and leadership development
All tenants are welcome to participate. Community volunteers
are encouraged, and donations to the tenant organization may
be made to Avalon and earmarked for Pilot Light.
